Morning was filled with Sea Lions. I made my way to the jetty and was surrounded by barking pinnipeds. I have decided to study up on the wildlife that I'm catching images of. I read about Sea Lions and found out some interesting facts. The male sea lion can be up to 8 feet long and weight as much as 800 lbs. Females up to 6 feet and 240 lbs. They are know for their brown coat, little ears and loud bark. I watch them fly through the ocean with great speed, they are playful and I can tell they are social creatures. Today I watched them chase each other, bark and nag at each other as they compete for space on the rocks around the jetty. They have a behavior that they float and hold a fin out of the water that is called jugging. Scientists suspect this has to do with them maintaining heat in their bodies. They have pups in rookeries and ours go to the Channel Islands to breed. They eat squid, fish and octopus, that would explain the activity. I believe the fishing boats are all out catching squid right now. While the mom's are fishing they leave the pups on the beach in what is called "pup pods" I find that I enjoy the sea lions and am drawn to both the jetty and wharf where you can spot them.
Spring is here!
On this day in 2018
Phil and I walked around at sunrise at Lover's Point and I took an image of a set that they were using for Big Little Lies.
We dog sat for Aimee. I wrote a blog about her: Aimee "White lightening" Harris - love, joy and heartbreak - Please be aware of the dangers of rodent poison Phil adored Aimee, she was a rescue dog and was an escape artist. She got away from her mom and ingested rat poison. We were devastated to find out, it broke our hearts. I hope that the two of you get to visit, Philly I know you are surrounded by all our animal friends.
For Phil:
I miss you, I loved you to the moon and back.
This is Phil on this day in 2019, a visit to Big Sur. We loved to visit Big Sur and did so often. We always stopped at the Big Sur Lodge for hot chocolate and the Big Sur River Inn for lunch.
