I always look forward to spending time with sea otters, Always hopeful that I will spot one while I'm on my walk. I got lucky this morning and watched this one feed on mussels and crabs. I have seen them dine on purple urchins and even an octopus one time.
Fact 1 Sea otters will sea urchins, snails, clams, abalone, mussels, crabs, scallops, fish, barnacles, octopus, worms, and squid, which it captures with its clawed paws, not its jaws.
Fact 2 Sea Otters use a rock to help them crack open the shells of their food. The one I watched this morning grabbed a big rock to work on the crab it pulled up. (video below)
Fact 3 The sea otter must eat between 25 and 40 percent of its body weight daily, just to keep warm.
Fact 4 Sea otter fur is the densest of any mammal at about 1 million hairs per square inch
Fact 5 .An adult female California sea otter is about 50 lbs. Males can weigh up to 70 lbs.
Fact 6 A male sea otter bites a female’s nose to hold onto her during mating.
Fact 7 They eat sea urchins & other invertebrates that graze on giant kelp. Sea Otters help keep a balance in the kelp forest.
Fact 8 California has a sea otter population of about 3,000 individuals range from Half Moon Bay to Point Conception.
Fact 9 Sea otters are social animals and will gather together. A group of sea otters is called a raft.
Fact 10 The Monterey Bay Aquarium has a sea otter rescue and research dept.
