No plan for my walk this morning, I just whipped out of the house to see what the sunrise was going to bring. I will tell you what it didn't bring -- the battery to my camera. Back home and restart. I decided to head toward the Wharf and see what came my way.
Through Cannery Row.
I spotted a succulent and air plant piece of art, it was hanging on a wall behind the Monterey Plaza.
What happened next was an amazing wildlife moment. I walked onto a launching ramp and noticed two sea otters. I could just see them rolling around together. I soon figured out I was witnessing sea otters mating. They rolled around not noticing me and I did my best to catch images. They were moving about quickly, it was hard to catch but below is my best attempt. You can click on the images to make them larger. I had always heard that the sea otters could be a bit vicious during mating. The female's nose was bitten, but it was quiet, with a lot of swimming and biting. Both sea otters were tagged, one with a blue tag and the other with a red. I watched them for about 15 minutes. They separated from each other and then groomed themselves, floating away from me. WOW!
On my way off the launching ramp I spotted a sea urchin on the wood.
As far as I was concerned that what I saw was enough to fill my morning. But I kept walking and spotted some snowy egrets.
I headed to the Lighthouse District on my way home. Before Phil was diagnosed with cancer, my daughter, Nicole had a store called, "Ma's Green Living". Both my daughters and myself worked at Ma's when we weren't at our other jobs. She sold eco friendly products, local art including mine and we held classes as well. Many good memories of that time. With the diagnosis we could not maintain the store and we closed down. The time we had was filled with fun, Nicole taught about alternatives to plastics, we participated in fairs and we met many friends.
There is another store where Ma's had been, I wish them prosperity during these very hard times to be in business.
From the old days....
For Phil
Missing you, filled with wonderful memories.
