"These soft-ground etchings come from the series InsideOut, a study of female underwear in Western culture. As consumers, we search for meaning and identity in the products we purchase. Through our clothing we decide how we want to be viewed by others. Just like everything else we wear, our underwear, although rarely seen by others, is a social signifier."
. The last MRI showed a new, very small spot on Phil's brain in the approximate place where the last tumor had been removed. We were told it was about 50/50 chance that it could be a cancerous. Astrocytoma 3 is a fact of life, we have a new normal and we try to live life to the fullest. However this wait seemed to be more difficult for Phil, his health has suffered, depression has shown its face but he continues to move forward with hope, love and a batch of courage.
Those that know me, understand that I have danced, sang and told horrible jokes trying to keep the mood light. We walk miles and take hundreds of photos on the quest to keep healthy and somewhat calm. What keeps us happy are our adventures and the beautiful nature around us.
This time our adventure took us to the, 28th Annual Monterey County Artist Open Studio Tour.
We are partial to artists, the creative process and art certainly has been a part of the healing process for both of us. We tried to visit as many artists on the route as we could, until exhaustion set in. If you missed it this weekend, some of the studios are showing again next weekend - Oct. 6 and 7th, 2018. I'm hoping we might get out to see some more art and studios next weekend.
Before we left home we randomly picked where to go, we visited locations in Seaside, Monterey and Pacific Grove.
Under each photo of individual studios or artists I will try to give you a little information and a link to get you to their web pages.
First stop: Open Ground Studios
We arrived as the artists were prepping the studio for they day, they treated us with kindness, welcoming us and spending time telling us about their art.
Reflections as we enter the Open Ground Studios
"I, Linda Lay, am formally interested in consumerism, mysticism, nature, fashion, crafting, the Internet and investigating personal experience. I use mediums of digital technology, fiber, pencil, watercolor, acrylic, oil paint, gold leaf, polymer clay and wire to create sculpture, paintings and drawings."
Printmaking, painting & design in Pacific Grove, CA
"A little bit about myself….I am a local artist on the Monterey Peninsula specializing in large scale reduction woodcut. I am a founding member of Open Ground Studio and graduate from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art with a concentration in photography and printmaking."
"As an artisan, I bring together my menagerie of artistic outlets, each formed as an expression of my creativity, to share with you "

"Growing up in Brazil, color is a part of your soul. That’s how artist Renata Abma interprets the world around her; a world full of color, expression, texture and contrast. Her paintings, drawings and prints are her interpretations of natural and urban spaces, and how people exist within these settings. Delving into different mediums, she seeks to explore compositions and scenes that express the contrast between her childhood in a megalopolis with the expressive natural landscapes of her current home in Monterey."

Thank you Open Ground Studios
Then we were off to Monterey! We made our way through a couple of studios. I loved the dress sculptures, they were incredible and different.
"My passion for shapes and textures goes back to childhood when I formed fabric scraps into funny looking dresses for my dolls. Those skills evolved professionally with a fashion design career that required precise pattern making, ready to wear clothing; and on the more creative side-costumes, evening wear, and draping (for days-and loving it) with any foldable medium, even forged metal.Tastes and aspirations change over time and I eventually “fell off the runway”."

"I’m returning to visual arts (specifically painting and collage) after a hiatus of several decades, during which I focused on writing and teaching (English/writing). As with my writing, my art tends to be experimental and process-oriented. I love to explore bold colors, shapes, and line through painting and haptic drawing, often incorporating collage as a way to bring my personal history and experience into the process. My materials are primarily acrylics (occasionally water-soluble oils) on canvas or paper. More recently, I've been exploring collage combining paint, cut paper, and digital media."
We pressed forward and headed back to Pacific Grove and closer to home.
The Tin Cannery is the home to several studios, we started there. I only included photos of the artists that we talked to, there were many more artists at the Cannery that we didn't get to talk to.

"As a marine biologist and science educator, I have a deep appreciation for effective and compelling visual aids in the service of science. Science illustration is a powerful tool in communicating natural processes and behaviors that photography and videography cannot always capture. Art also has the power to inspire curiosity and passion for stewardship."

Working Fine Artist since 1991, Andrew Jackson brings to the Outer Edge Studio, his 20 year experience of working with galleries, publishers, collectors, and Artists.
We had a great time in the Tin Cannery at ArtWorks@Pacific Grove. I caught our reflections and a mural on the way out. We were starting to run out of steam, but we had a couple of more places that we wanted to check out, we headed into downtown Pacific Grove.
We ran into Cleo on our way back to the car, she was creating musical art, to help pay for college.
Next stop was in a home on Lighthouse Ave.
“I think as people we have more shared experience than our differences, that the more we study something the more abstract and open to interpretation it becomes, and it is only worth owning a piece of art if it speaks to you and you can discover something new every time you look at it”.
"My primary painting medium over the years as an illustrator was watercolor. Its gorgeous luminosity and transparency have always been a sensual pull for me. At present, I am concentrating on a personal visual interpretation, painting in a more abstract style using acrylic & collage"

You will see in the Galleries works in watercolors, acrylics, pastels, and oils. I have found the challenge of learning the special attributes of each of these media to help keep my outlook fresh. Each brings a distinctive character to a subject.
"LUXE Casual handcrafted jewelry is inspired by my love to create and a fascination with the fabrication process. I love playing with textures on metal. You can add texture in a variety of ways including using a rolling mill, hammers, engravers, various tools and stamps. When you add an antiquing solution (patina) it highlights the texture and gives the piece depth and dimension and this is when you see it all come together."
"Her works are always a collaboration with Nature. So she expects that her works will heal the persons who handle them. She has supplied her Ikebana vases for the International Ikebana Monterey Bay Chapter since 2004"
As you can imagine, we were starting to wear down. There was one more place that we wanted to visit, The Pacific Grove Adult School. There we would see our final 3 artist and round out a very busy day. It worked great for keeping us busy, we found joy in the art and inspiration from the artists.
Thank you to all of you that shared your time, energy and art with us!
Living life to the fullest, treasuring each moment and finding joy during adverse times.
Grateful, appreciative and now tired....
must sleep.
Tomorrow = dog sitting with Lily and Dagny.
Keeping busy.....mind occupied and having fun together.
Love and thanks to all!
Linda and Phil
