Driving into San Diego was a pretty big culture shock after being the Arizona desert for a few days. We were having communication problems, so finding our hotel was challenging and the traffic into San Diego was a fast paced rush. Once we finally got into town, got Noelle's phone to working and started to look for a place to stay, we realized the challenge was on. The rooms were expensive and they were renting them as fast as we could find them. We thought we had a deal sealed up, but we had made a mistake and reserved for the wrong night. Phil went in to check us in and found that we were reserved for the following night, no refunds, so at that point we knew we were staying two nights in San Diego. The search was back on for a place to stay for the night, we finally found a room near to where we had ended up in Cardiff, it was slightly above the budget, but at this point we needed a room. It ended up we got into the hotel lobby 10 minutes before they closed the front door. When we pulled in, they were friendly, they got us settled in and we had a place to stay for the night. When we got into the room, it had two beds, but they were small beds. There were 3 of us.......so we pushed the beds together, made a small nest on the floor and we passed out. It ended up that we all slept great, including Noelle who said it was the most comfortable she had been. Ha! A great breakfast, clean room and good sleep, we began to explore the hotel. What a wonderful hotel it was! Cardiff by the Sea Lodge was a unique building, in a wonderful location and we loved our stay. The rooftop garden was magic!
We set out to explore San Diego, we all loved the sea air, the sun and the bustle of the city. We visited La Jolla and took a walk. We people watched at the beach, Phil took off his shoes and actually walked in the waves and then we picnicked by the shore.
We decided to check into our hotel for the evening. It is an older hotel the Portofino Beach Hotel in Encinitas. The lobby was fabulous, I did have thoughts of it would be scary in an earthquake. The view out of the window interesting. It was clean enough, we got a good night sleep there but it was in of a spiffing up.
We left the hotel for a drive and to look for a market to buy dinner. While driving around San Diego we noticed many painted horses, I think it was about the upcoming opening of Del Mar, they were colorful and fun. We bought a meal at the market and took it back to our hotel and got a good nights rest. The next day we were heading for Santa Barbara, that is where Phil and I met, Noelle grew up there and we were meeting her Dad so she could visit him.
Up early the next morning and we enjoyed a morning drive on the shoreline......and we were off and heading toward Santa Barbara............Good bye San Diego - it was fun!!!!
